Yoga in High Park: Sept 18th - Yoga Village September 14, 2016 16:16

Join us for our last class of the season!  We have Lauren Dee from Yoga Village instructing.

Yoga VillageYoga Village Instructor

About Lauren Dee:

INTERNATIONAL YOGA TEACHER BASED IN TORONTO, CANADA TRAINED IN MYSORE & KERALA, INDIA

Yoga is a process of self-awareness (mind) to self-acceptance (body) to self-transformation (spirit). My mission is to empower others to discover their authentic self through yoga. I am a “truth seeker”, Reiki Energy Therapist (level 1, 2 & 3) and a dedicated yoga teacher that endeavours to live the art of life. My interest in learning how to live in a mindful, heart-centred way began at the Sivasoorya Divine School of Yoga in Kerala, India where I rigorously studied under the Tantric Yogi Guru Raviji completing a 200 hour Hatha teacher training course. After India, my yogic journey led me to mystical places such as Egypt and Thailand where I developed a deeper understanding of mankind’s spiritual history. Naturally, I began to practice meditation and soon became a regular Vipassana meditator going on 10 day long retreats in complete silence. After 3 years of teaching yoga I returned to India for my second 200 hour teacher training, this time travelling to Mysore to learn the original Vinyasa method. Since then, I have returned to India for the third time to study Ashtanga at the K. Phattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore (KPJAYI) and I have made the commitment to return there yearly to deepen my personal practice. Yoga is an infinite path of discovery and I remind my students to enjoy the journey. I am always excited to connect with new students, from all walks of life, to share in the glory of yoga.

Yoga Village Studio

CASH ONLY

Pay-What-You-Choose (PWYC) Payment Structure

We also know that the people attending classes want to support our teachers, their fellow students and see the studio succeed.  The PWYC structure encourages people to come together as a community.

By giving students the ability to pay what they choose and the knowledge to choose a fair amount themselves, we are creating a socially equitable payment strategy that inspires generosity, while reinforcing the values of inclusion, trust, transparency and community.

Yoga in High Park: August 14th - Downward Dog Yoga Centre August 10, 2016 12:00

Let's give a warm welcome to Downward Dog Yoga Centre!  This is their first year participating in Yoga in High Park and we are looking forward to Jennifer Helland's class this Sunday.

Downward Dog LogoJennifer Helland - Downward Dog

      About Jennifer Helland:

Jennifer discovered yoga as a dancer in her young twenties. At her very first yoga class, the experience resonated so deeply within that she knew then how meaningful and important yoga was going to become in her life. Jennifer has been joyously teaching in Canada and abroad for the past twelve years. She completed her yoga teacher trainings at Downward Dog Yoga Centre and Octopus Garden Yoga Centre in Toronto. Jennifer teaches from the heart. She encourages her students to listen in, practice from a place of abundance and understand that there is no finish line.

      Outside Downward Dog

      About Downward Dog Yoga Centre:

As one of the pioneering yoga studios in Toronto, Downward Dog Yoga Centre continues to offer instruction to students looking to practice and learn the principles of Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga. Since the doors opened in 1997, our main focus has been to inspire and encourage students in a lifelong practice that is sustainable, enjoyable and in alignment with a holistic yoga practice. Our community has been built on the diversity of our students, a kind and respectful atmosphere and classes that inform every level of practice.

      Downward Dog Studio

Our method of practice and teaching is grounded in the Ashtanga Vinyasa lineage. Expanding on the lineage, our led classes range from solid foundational classes for beginners to dynamic and focused vinyasa-style classes. To expand on these roots, we encourage the deepening of our students’ practice with workshop series, weekend-format teacher trainings, month-long intensives and advanced teacher trainings for our existing teachers both in Canada, U.S., Costa Rica and abroad.

      Downward Dog Training

Studio Director, Ron Reid developed Downward Dog’s Mysore programme in 1997, making it the first of its kind in Canada. As an experienced practitioner of Ashtanga’s Primary, Intermediate and Advanced series, Ron has sought to share his respect for the natural intelligence of the body and his intuitive understanding of anatomy as it applies to yoga with his students. Ron has shared his insights in the Mysore room with students from all over the world, providing for each the possibility of innovation, stability and transformation in a ‘traditional’ yoga practice.

We have been offering Teacher Training Programs since 1999 and many of our graduates have gone on to teach and open yoga studios in Toronto and surrounding areas.

Do everything in moderation but everything. In my early 20's back pain stopped me in my tracks. As a competitive gymnast and sailor I was strong and fit and not prepared for an injury at such a young age. I was told Pilates was what I needed to do. Thus began my journey from a life in advertising to a life as a Pilates instructor. 20 years later I still enjoy enlightening others to the wonderful benefits of Pilates, core strength and fitness. Pilates has kept me going all this time.

Yoga in High Park: July 31st - Power Yoga Canada Etobicoke July 27, 2016 13:00

This Sunday we welcome Nastaran from Power Yoga Canada Etobicoke!

      Power Yoga Canada

      Power Yoga Canada

      About Nastaran:

I am first and foremost a human of gratitude. I am grateful for everything this universe offers up to me every single day and I try earnestly to give back in my way of being.

My life's journey until now has me as a mother of 2 beautiful souls, a youth worker, and yoga teacher with Power Yoga Canada in Leaside.  I am a believer in the magic and wonders of our universe and in sharing as much love and light as I can with those around me.

      Power Yoga Instructors

      About the studio:

It seems like such a long time ago now, but our very first studio opened up November 2, 2009.   We had a common dream, a place to bring community together and that is what Power Yoga Canada is.  Yoga is our medium - but transformation is our message.  So often we are asked what our trick is and how we have been able to grow this community.  I wish there was a secret sauce that we could bottle and market, but it is simple, we make everyone feel at home.

In the last couple years we have opened 5 studios and both have grown our personal families with new babies - both Kinndli and I had a baby on the same day 2 years apart - #crazy.  We have seen our students meet, get married, have babies.  Others have graduated and moved across the world.  Regardless as to where people have gone we love seeing them come home again and hear about how they are achieving their dreams and goals.

If there was one thing that I could share with you reading is that we, Power Yoga Canada is the home of everything Power Yoga.  Yes, I know it would be nice to get a yin class regularly on the schedule.  And yes, I understand that a pre-natal class would do so well, because there are so many pregnant women (I was one of them).  Well, here’s the thing - we do one thing and we do it the best in Canada, and that is HOT POWER YOGA.  And that is the one thing that we urge you to find out about yourself.  What are you the best in the world at? What are you most passionate about?  Find that - get up, and share it with the world!

So whether you decide to practice at Mississauga, or venturing out to Oshawa, one thing is for sure when you walk through the doors of a PYC someone will welcome you! If you are still reading this, tweet us @poweryogacanada use #bestintheworld and tell us, what you are the best at and one day soon we will be reading your bio :)  After all - empowering community into action is really what we are about.

      Much Love,
      Kinndli & Pauline

ps.  we want to say thank you to all of you who have practiced with us, cried with us, celebrated with us, changed our babies diapers for us.  YOU and ALL OF YOU have made this dream a reality.  Hilary Clinton said it best, “it takes a village to raise a child”...well PYC is our child and you have been the village that has kept it thriving.  Here’s to many more sweaty mats :)

      Power Yoga Values

      Our Mission, Vision & Values

Power Yoga Canada is a way of living - both in and out of the yoga room. You will be empowered, inspired and lit up to take your life on and to be a shining light to everyone around you. At PYC our medium is yoga, but our mission is simple:

      EMPOWER COMMUNITIES INTO ACTION

The way we execute our mission statement is by following the core values extracted from a book called, The Collaborative Way, that we have implemented amongst our studios, teachers and energy exchange programs:

      Generate Fitness

       About Generate Fitness:

      Generative Strength

A Place to Build Generative Strength

Generate literally means “to bring into being.” Fitness is a life long, continuous investment in yourself that gives you the strength to make the most of your life, no matter what age or fitness level.

Strength doesn’t mean rock-hard abs or a bikini-bod. It means having a strong heart to take your kids for a bike ride and a clear head to keep stress at bay. In short, strength is having what you need to live better.

      Planets Health

Your Health is the Planet's Health

Your health is linked to the health of the planet. On a small scale  you shouldn’t run on the treadmill and then wipe it down with triclosan loaded wipes. On a bigger scale being healthy means having clean air to breathe and green places to go outside and play.

We think of health on a bigger scale and invite you to walk the walk while you’re walking on the treadmill.

      Healthy Space

      Healthy Space

Our space features natural light and fresh air. And every element, from paint to flooring to equipment, right down to the soap in the shower is non-toxic and deliberately chosen to support you on your journey to good health.

We’re outdoorsy types and love High Park. Join us for walking groups and fitness classes in the park enabling you to reap the benefits of connecting to the natural world.

      Accommodating Parents

      Accommodating Parents

We also offer childcare in an enriching environment allowing you to mindfully engage in classes and programs knowing your kids are in good hands.

      Green Energy

      Green Energy

Here’s the topper. Our bikes and ellipticals capture human energy and transform it into off-grid “green” power that we use to operate our space.  We are proud to be the first gym in Toronto to have these amazing energy generators.

5 Tips to Clean Out Your Closet This Fall October 21, 2015 12:08

There's not better time to organize your space than Fall. De-cluttering has multiple physical and emotional benefits such as:

      • reduces allergens (dust, etc)

      • tidying encourages cleaning, and cleaning helps to get rid of bacteria and other cold inducing things

      • feel in control: when your space is organized, your brain is organized

      • mental clarity

      • reminds you of your carbon footprints -no one likes throwing out junk, but it will make you think twice the next time you want to buy something for the sake of buying)

Are we on the same page? Great! Let's get started.

      HOW TO DE-CLUTTER YOUR CLOSET

1.If you haven't worn it in 1 year, get rid of it

We all have those "skinny" jeans... those jeans we hope of fitting into once we finally lose those last 10 pounds. Just get rid of them already. If you haven't worn a piece of clothing in over a year, you likely won't wear it next year either. We tend to go back to the same 5-6 outfits that we love, so focus on those styles and nix the rest.

      2. Holes, tears, stains are a no no

You love that sweater. It's your absolute favorite. But you've worn it to bits, the armpits are stained yellow and the seams are coming apart. You feel embarrassed to wear it, so stop! Make a commitment to replace it with something similar, but throw the old out. It collects dust and takes up room that should be saved for a go-to item.

      3. Plan for the future

Once you've donated, sold and throw out all the clothes that no longer serve your closet, plan for the future so you don't end up cluttering your closet again. Is there a particular look you've settled on for the upcoming season? Focus on those items. Use your willpower to avoid frivolous spending or deal hunting. Skip the uber trend 'fast fashion' pieces from H & M and buy one or two high quality pieces that can be worn for multiple seasons that you love

      4. Aesthetics matter

De-cluttering your closet doesn't just mean throwing out the old, it means actually finding a organizational system that works for you. Instead of throwing all your socks mismatched into a drawer, find their pal and fold them neatly. Organize your hanging items from lightest to heaviest. Fold your shirts and turn your pants right side out. Not only can organizing be incredibly therapeutic, but this kind of cleaning can make finding your favorite pieces more easily.

      5. Maintain

Now that you have a reduced and organized closet with high quality pieces that make you happy make sure you maintain over time. Sometimes we rush in the morning and throw our clothes in a bundle in the closet or on the floor, but the key to a clutter free closet and head space is to keep your space as neat as it would be if company were over. A daily tidy is much more effective than a month overhaul.

How do you clean out your closet?

Lauren is a “truth seeker”, Reiki Energy Therapist (level 1, 2 & 3) and a dedicated yoga teacher that endeavours to live the art of life. Her interest in learning how to live in a mindful, heart-centred way began at the Sivasoorya Divine School of Yoga in Kerala, India where Lauren rigorously studied under the Tantric Yogi Guru Raviji completing a 200 hour Yoga Alliance hatha teacher training. It was there Lauren uncovered the secret power of yoga and meditation. After India, her yogic journey led her to mystical places such as Egypt and Thailand where she developed a rich understanding of mankind’s spiritual history. Naturally, Lauren began to practice meditation and soon she became a regular Vipassana meditator going on 10 day long retreats in complete silence. After 3 years of teaching yoga Lauren returned to India for her second 200 hour Yoga Alliance teacher training, this time travelling to Mysore to learn the original Vinyasa method. Lauren knows that yoga is an infinite path of discovery and reminds her students to enjoy the journey. She is always excited to connect with new students, from all walks of life, to share in the sweetness of yoga.

HUGE thank you to Monica from Power Yoga Canada for such a fun and challenging class last Sunday!

This week we have Denise from Generate Fitness...

In 2011, she completed a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training program at Yogaspace. She studied Hatha Yoga with Patricia White in the tradition of Vanda Scaravelli, consciously balancing effort and rest. She also studied Vinyasa Yoga with Kathryn Beet, focusing on finding ease in movement with the breath. Since then, she has completed a Restorative Yoga Certificate with Hali Schwartz, Yin Yoga with Cathy Kennan and Reiki Master Certificate with Stephanie Norwich. Contrary to popular belief, Yoga is not the practice of being flexible. Yoga is the practice of uniting the mind and the body. It teaches us to be present, to connect with our own thoughts and to realize our own potential. As a student, she is always amazed at how her yoga practice has strengthened her body and provided clarity of mind. She hopes to inspire her students to find that strength, stability and focus.
Denise unrolled her first yoga mat over 10 years ago at a local gym to compliment her fitness routine. After that first Power Yoga class, she was hooked. As her practice developed, she enjoyed the benefits of various intense styles of yoga. Her journey with yoga, suddenly too a sharp turn with a cancer diagnosis in 2008. During her treatment, she began to explore different styles of yoga and other healing modalities to cope with stress and anxiety. She has since developed an interest in gentle and restorative yoga styles and the desire to share her healing journey with others.

If you hang back after class, we have a tasty treat for you...

Toronto based Kombucha company "Yogasoda" will be at Yoga in High Park to give you a probiotic dose of deliciousness post-yoga class.

When we discovered Kombucha, it was love at first taste. We began brewing in our home immediately and started to spread the message to anyone who would listen. After feeling the benefits of drinking Kombucha on a regular basis, we are determined to share it with the world, and that is when we began our idea for YogaSoda.

Yoga is the union of mind, body and spirit. By nourishing our bodies with natural drinks like Kombucha, we bring ourselves closer to that alignment. YogaSoda is a union - a union of good taste and good health. Cheers to your health!

Her love for yoga is balanced with a deep passion for family, health, personal growth and an adventurous spirit.

"Find your pampered balance, between the ebb of the inhale of breath and the flow of the exhale of breath.  After all this is Your Breath  Your Practice  Your Journey, find what inspires you through your breath, keep your thoughts positive, and release any judgments as you find your peace on the mat."

      -Jack Kornfield

Huge shout out to our friendly participant, Lily, who became our fabulous instructor in a pinch! No matter how much you plan, sh!t happens. Thank you for surfing with us this week.

When: Every Sunday June 28th - September 13th at 10:00am
Where: High Park, just west of the Bloor Street Entrance (next to the Chess House)
What to bring: Sunscreen, a mat or towel, water, an open mind

This week we have Alex from Think Fitness leading a Yoga in High Park session.

Health, fitness and active living are a way of life for me. My passion is to bring that way of life to those around me. It’s not just about getting in a fierce workout but to also have an impact on my clients to assist them in leading happier, healthier, and more joyful lives. My love for adventure makes me want to push the limits and constantly strive to have great experiences with those who make my life amazing. In training I like to incorporate a mix of high intensity cardio, body weight exercises, kettle bells and I love that barbell! I will motivate you to accomplish what you never thought possible.

"If you are achieving all your goals, you're not setting them high enough."

       Namaste

       YogaSoda Sisters,

      Jelena & Masa

The Perfect Summer Drink July 07, 2015 16:21

Smoothies, Kombucha, iced tea, there are just so many summer drink options!

But if you're looking for the most ridiculously simple recipe, that yields an insanely delicious drink... we have the one you're looking for!
This recipe has just 3 main ingredients... YES THREE!
      The Watermelon Yogi Cocktail
      makes 4 servings
      1/2 watermelon
      5 ounces vodka
      Some fresh basil
      1-3 cups ice

      Directions
Choose a watermelon - they are perfectly ripe when they make a hollow sound if you knock on the outside.
Cut the watermelon in half and scoop out the meat. Either put the melon directly into a blender, or you can freeze the melon in a bowl for a thicker drink texture (think slush instead of drink).
Add the vodka and 6-8 leaves of fresh basil. Note you cannot substitute fresh basil for dried. It just won't work. For another flavour profile you can dry fresh mint instead of basil. Both are delish!
Blend all together with 1-3 cups of ice depending on the consistency you prefer. The more ice the more slush-like the drink will be.
Serve with an herb garnish and drink with good friends over a BBQ.

If you plan on drinking a few of these, be sure to change out of your Flow-active outfit. No one likes watermelon shirt stains... am I right?

Of course, you are more than welcome to make this a work friendly drink and omit the vodka. Try adding a squeeze of lime and soda water too!

Share the Love of Yoga and Heal Hearts Together June 22, 2015 15:33

Share the Love of Yoga and Heal Hearts Together

Annu Gaidhu - Founder of Healing Hearts & Miss India Canada 2014

Kindness, compassion and service are all inherent parts of the yoga culture, and make no mistake about it; together we inspire the power to transform lives and communities through our practice of yoga. The Healing Hearts Project stems from the practice of Karma Yoga or selfless service. Yoga is a practice of service to humanity. By using the transformative benefits of yoga, together we can empower vulnerable youth living within impoverished communities in India.

      Impact

Yoga has empowered millions of people across the world by supporting physical, mental and emotional health, facilitating authentic personal expression, building supportive communities and inspiring positive action to contribute to others.

       ImageImage

“There are children raised without parents or in abusive conditions that often lack basic social skills, quality education or confidence, they don’t ask to be put in that environment, they are born into it. Yoga has been my healing therapy tool and has taught me how to love myself; as a yoga educator I have an obligation to share with youth what yoga gave me so they can too, transform their lives and feel empowered to build that sense of self” - Annu Gaidhu

How can we contribute to this Dharma work together?

Join us each and every Sunday for Flow Actives Yoga at High Park ! In the spirit of karma, donations will be accepted to the Healing Hearts Project.

Flow-active's Yoga in High Park 2014

      The Low Down

      What We Do

      • The Healing Hearts Project is committed to providing access to quality education and well-being programs to ensure the healthy development and physical well being of children and youth at the Bir Sakya Lama School in Bir, Himachal Pradesh; India.

      How We Do It

      • The Healing Hearts Project uses the approach of working in collaboration with young people, school educators and community partners to find ways that best meet the needs they identify, taking the time to build community bridges and approach our work with long-term investment and sensitivity.

Portion of proceeds will go towards providing health care for students

Portion of proceeds will go towards providing stationary supplies for students

Portion of proceeds will go towards expanding infrastructure to build a new playground for students & towards sponsorship for new students admitted into the Bir Sakya Lama Monastery each month

Many of these children do not see their parents of family members for years, some get visits once a year. Their sole place of refuge is the monastery and care being in the monastery for years. According to Buddhist scriptures, a child mature enough to protect fields from insects and birds is capable of choosing the path of “Lamahood”.

Most are orphans, or from single-parent families, or from poor families. Most monks are recruited at a very age and are sent for a variety of reasons, including education, poverty and lack of family support.

Get Inspired via Instagram: Canadian Yogis May 13, 2015 13:39

Everyone begins their yoga journey in different ways.

Maybe your friend dragged you to a class, and you got hooked.

      Or you started practicing online.

You may have been doing yoga on and off for years.

There are endless starting points! But for many, the journey into yoga begins from a jolt of inspiration through Instagram.

      Yes Instagram.

You may know Instagram as that app your friends post photos of their dinners on. Or that app that helps you feel closer to celebrities. Or that app that allows you to window shop your favorite brands without  having to leave your couch.

Yes, Instagram has many useful (albeit not vital) uses in everyday life. Including yoga inspiration.

There are many users who post tutorials on poses or offer monthly challenges and simple everyday reminders to get on your mat and start practising.

Well, if you are looking for a little inspiration, we've got you covered. We've narrowed down the list to some of our favorite Canadian yogis on Instagram. Check them out!

      Elaina Palmer: @elainapalmer

Originally from BC, Elaina now resides in Texas.

We love Elaina's account for many reasons. From her stunning Canadian back drops to her adorable outfits. Follow @elainapalmer for adorable family yoga photos, unique solo shots and everything in between.

      Sufey Chen: @sufeychen

Also from BC, Sufey is currently travelling the world.

Her instagram is stacked with gorgeous shots displaying her love for mother nature and her amazing yoga teacher training and retreat company "Yoga University". You can find more info on her training and retreats Here!

      Melissa Lee: @pocketdwarf

Melissa and her family live in Calgary.

If you are looking for inspiration, Melissa is it. A pregnant mother, her instagram account shows just how much you can accomplish with a little dedication. If she can do it, so can you!

      Erica Jenkins: @getfityogagirl

A self taught yogi from Hamilton, Ontario.

What can yoga do for you? Not only can it help you lose negative thought patterns, it can help you lose 90 lbs if you're Erica! (you go girl). Check out her account for healthy living advice and inspiring progress pictures.

Anyone we didn't mention that you love to follow? Let us know!

We are also looking for Canadian social media ambassadors!

If you are interested, email flowactive@outlook.com with your social media handles, and an explanation of why you would like to be an ambassador for Flow-active!

Where to Find Free Yoga in Toronto April 23, 2015 21:02

If you've been to a few yoga classes, you'll know... that sh!t's expensive!

Lucky for you, we've compiled some of our favorite ways to sneak in free yoga classes around Toronto

      1. United Athletics

This new gym located at Dufferin and Bloor has a refreshing community vibe going on. Primarily a boxing studio, a number of times a week this no frills gym transforms into a chilled out yoga studio.

The classes are free or pay-what-you-can, making it a great place to go for a "cheap and cheerful" yoga fix. Both Yin and Yang practices are available! Check their schedule HERE

      2. Yoga In High Park

Every Sunday morning in Toronto's beautiful High Park, Flow-active hosts a free yoga class. Each week a different studio in Toronto donates their teachers to lead a class under the sunny sky.

The classes start up again in June, so be sure to check back for exact dates. You can find the information HERE. Don't forget to bring sunscreen!

      3. Karma Teachers

Leading the Free or pay-what-you-can movement, Karma teachers offer loads of classes open to the public.

From Vinyasa to Kundalini, this studio has something for just about everyone. Join the tribe HERE.

      4. Yoga Village

Located on the hip and happenin' Roncesvalles ave, Yoga Village offers a fantastic pay-what-you-choose program. The perfect location to practice before strolling the streets in the summer.

This is not a free class, but rather a class of choice. Pay as little as $5 to ensure you are receiving the best instruction. For a fantastic explanation of how this program works, check out their website HERE.

      Honorable Mentions: The AGO

The Art Gallery of Ontario offers (incredibly cool) yoga classes for free on site. Monday evenings, Thursday mornings and Sunday Mornings.

It'll cost you about $10 per drop in class, but considering most classes run you about $20, and this class is in the actual gallery, it's a darn good deal! Find their schedule HERE.

       Honorable Mentions: Passport to Prana

This little card can take you to over 40 Toronto Yoga studios, and even more including the GTA, for only $30!

Your Passport to Prana expires after 1 year, but allows you entrance to all the participating studios once. That adds up to under $1.00 per class. BAM! Order your passport online HERE. Or pick it up from Flow-active: 2237 Bloor Street West, Toronto.

      3 Reasons Why It's Important to Shop Local March 31, 2015 14:25

3 Reasons Why It's Important to Shop Local

When we set out to shop, we often hear quiet murmurs encouraging us to "Shop Local." But what does it even mean?

To shop local means to avoid large chain stores and opt to shop at smaller, independently run retailers. This means swapping out Starbucks for The Common. Walking past Lululemon and going to Flow-active. Skipping the line at Chipotle and trying Tacos el Asador

      But... why?

Here are 3 reasons why you should shop local.

      1. It's Better for the Environment

I think by now, most of us realize the pressure we put on the Earth in our daily lives.

Something as simple as buying a product that is made closer to where it is bought will surely lessen your carbon footprint. Let's say I want a new pair of leggings. If I buy them from Lululemon, the fabric is made across where it is often shipped to another country. Then garment is actually made and shipped a great distance to a warehouse, where it waits to be shipped to the particular store you bought it from.

On the other hand, if you buy the leggings from a local store, like Flow-active, the fabric and garment is made in Canada, and shipped a much shorter distance to the store. Sometimes, local artists like Fellow Citizens even walk their product to the door. Isn't that amazing?

      2. It Encourages Human Equality

It's a fair assumption that no one wants to think a child or severely underpaid worker has sewed their clothing.

This is a reality that many of us try not to think about. But not thinking about it,doesn't make it any less true.
If you live in North America, shopping locally means the workers by law must be paid a certain amount. It means that you must be a certain age to work. And it means there must be certain safety standards in place.

Of course not all overseas workers are treated unfairly, but some are. And it is difficult to research which companies produce their products ethically. If you buy a product that is locally manufactured, you ensure you are driving an ethical industry.

      3. It Promotes Industry in Canada

The job market in Canada is a finicky one. It's tough to get jobs, it's tough to keep jobs. The economy is in a slump and almost no one can actually afford to buy a house in Toronto these days.

I read a story recently that stated for every $100 spent at a local business, $73 stay in our local economy. For every $100 spent at a non-local business, only $43 stay in our local economy.

It seems clear that an easy step towards create a more sustainable and rich economy is to support local endeavours. It creates more jobs, filters more money into your local economy, and creates a proud community around a local product.

If you want to shop local but don't know where to get started, here are some tips:

      1. Read labels! Your garments will tell you exactly where they come from.

      2. Research. If you go to the website of a store and they don't post about where they manufacture, it's probably not local. Companies that manufacture in Canada and the US are proud and will state it. Companies that manufacture unethically are not proud and will try to hide it.

      3. Ask questions. Before you buy something, ask the clerk where it comes from. This goes for vegetables and leggings.

      Chocolate Coconut Zoatmeal March 27, 2015 12:38

This is literally the best oatmeal I’ve ever had. AND I’VE HAD A LOT OF OATMEAL IN MY DAYS.

Right off the bat, you may be wondering what a lame blogger I am that I can’t spell “oatmeal” correctly. This, my friends, is not a horrible spelling mistake. There’s oatmeal, and then there is ZOATMEAL.

Zoats are a magical thing that was discovered via Instagram (oh Instagram, you are too good to be true). The premise of zoats is that you add shredded zucchini to your oatmeal. Why? Well, you definitely get a few more nutrients in there. But more importantly, for the orally fixated munchers out there, you get to keep eating and eating and eating, while adding only a few calories. By cooking your oatmeal with zucchini, you can double the volume and make it healthier all while tasting virtually the exact same (maybe even better!). This is the only way I eat my oatmeal these days.

      But I digress…

Why are these the best (z)oats ever? Because I discovered a dangerously delicious product: coconut manna.

      MANNAAAAA

Let me rant about coconut manna for a while now: if coconut oil is like peanut oil, coconut manna is like peanut butter. HOLY F**KING S**T”  is what you must be thinking. That’s what I thought when I first saw it. But then I received my iherb package. I popped the lid, took out a spoon, and airplane-d that stuff right into my mouth. Uuuguuguhhhh. I am a coconut LOVER. So trust me when I say, it does not get better than this.

      Now back to the oatmeal…

Here is the recipe for the best oats you’ll ever have… until I find a new concoction and blog about it :P

      What you will need

1/2 cup quick oats (or quick steel cut oats)

      1/2 cup zucchini, grated

      1 cup unsweetened almond milk

1 tsp cocoa or cacao powder

1 tbsp coconut manna (if you don’t have it, I usually make this with peanut butter instead)

      1/4 tsp stevia

      1 banana

      Directions

Simmer the oats, zucchini, almond milk, cocoa and stevia on a small pot on medium heat for 5 minutes, stiring every minute so it doesn’t stick to the bottom. when the oatmeal is at your desired consistency, turn off the heat and add the coconut manna. Serve with some shredded coconut or a banana. Eat. Repeat every morning until you are sick of it (aka never).

      yerpaderp

caution: do not buy coconut manna if you do not have enough will power to avoid eating it all with a spoon before you even put it in your pantry.

The best part about this breakfast is the health benefits and weight control potential. The oats keep you fuller longer while giving you tones of energy for your workout. The zucchini and banana offers a nice dose of vitamins. And the coconut... well... that's a whole other blog post. Long story short, coconut is the ultimate health food

Enjoy this new addition to your morning and don't forget to put on your Flow-active gear before hitting the gym!

Free Label Betty Tank & Daub + Design Leggings

      A Recipe for Spring Tonic March 13, 2015 13:27

Everyone needs a pick-me-up after a long Canadian Winter. Tonic Lifestyle Apparel has just the concoction for you!

Bright colors, funky updates of old favorites, and super durable, super soft fabrics... Tonic's new Spring line is just in and we are loving it.

Here is a breakdown of our favorite new pieces:

      1. Peak Cutout Legging

Classic black legging with a twist. A sell out last year, this sexy legging is the perfect Spring update to your favorite basic. Wear to yoga, the gym or out with friends. Compliments guaranteed.

      2. Tranquil Tank

If you like the Tonic Free Spin (who doesn't?!), you'll love the Tranquil Tank. The open back and color blocking bra keep you cool and the band at the bottom keeps your shirt on. Yogis agree - this is the best style for any inversion heavy practice.

      3. Spirit Bra

Can a sports bra be practical and stylish? Tonic says yes! with their new Spirit Bra. We love to pair this bra with a loose tank for a comfortable work out, or cute 'out on the town' look.

      4. Circuit Short

Love to run, but hate to wear tight running shorts, or loose shorts that ride up? The Circuit short is the solution to your problems! With a built in short and a loose over short, these cute shorts are perfect for runners, tennis players, hikers... you name it!

      5. Danica Pullover

It's almost cottage season, and that means... cute and comfy pullovers! The Danica pullover is not only super soft and perfectly lightweight, it outdoes the competition with its stylish half zip and rouched neckline for a sleek, casual look.

Which one would you wear? Let us know!

      Repost: 13 Alternatives to Lululemon March 13, 2015 13:26

This article is reposted from Shevasana Blog.

      13 ALTERNATIVES TO LULULEMON

onzie yoga pants in bandanaDon’t get me wrong, I love Lululemon, but they’re not the only players in the game. Ever since I developed a passion for printed pants I have found myself exploring a whole new world of yoga attire possibilities! I admit it’s become a bit of an addiction.

Here are 13 places where you can find rad yoga clothes for when you’re looking for something a little different to add to your collection of energy bras.

      FLOW-Active
FLOW-Active (previously One Tooth Activewear) is located at 2237 Bloor Street West and carries predominately Canadian brands, as well as a number of others. I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet (shame on me!) but after perusing their website I intend to make a stop there in the very near future.

      One Tooth Activewear
One Tooth itself is a Vancouver-based company that specializes in high quality, Canadian-made yoga and loungewear. While you can get them at FLOW-Active, you can also order items online.

      Onzie
Pictured up and to the right is my current obsession, a pair of silky pants in “bandana” by US-made Onzie. I found these guys up in Blue Mountain at the One Tooth location there, but they also carry them at FLOW-Active and you can order them online. They have so many fun prints and the pants feel awesome and sexy on.

      Titika Active Couture (above)
A personal favourite of mine, Titika‘s yoga wear is fashionable, original, comfy and urban. Just looking at their clothing, you get the feeling they put a lot of thought and consideration into their designs. They always have great sales to make room for what constantly feels like rotating new stock. They have a few locations in Ontario and you can find them here in Toronto at 357 Queen Street West.

      Inner Fire
I just discovered this New Westminster B.C. apparel company and I think my wallet tried to hide from me. Inner Fire has so many colourful leggings and witty tanks that say things like “I’m Just Here For The Savasana” and “Shake Your Asana,” with a number of inspirational messages thrown in for good measure. Find them in Toronto at the Ashtanga Yoga Centre.

Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 6.10.37 PMTonic
Another Canadian company that you can purchase at a number of studios and shops in Toronto, including FLOW-Active.  Pictured right, Tonic manufacturers their clothes in Vancouver and while I’ve never tried any of their stuff on before, it looks nice and classic.

      Loko Sport
This eco-friendly line is another piece of Canadian pride favouring Canadian fabric distributors. In Toronto, you can find them at the Wildflower boutique at 2780  Yonge Street, just north of Eglinton.  (PS: I want this shirt). (Edit: can also buy at Flow-active at 2237 Bloor Street West or www.flow-active.com)

      Lija Style
Another B.C. brand, Lija Style is a multi-sport clothing line known especially for their golf and tennis wear that has been around for about 15 years. Their clothing is really colourful and bright, though I’m not sure if it’s available here in Toronto. Huffington Post once said this brand may be the new Lululemon.

      Mika Yoga Wear
I’ve had my eyes on a few things at Mike Yoga Wear for a while and have been meaning to check out one of the two locations in the city that carry the line: Brass Vixens at 721 Queen Street West and Felinity Inc at 794 Broadview Ave. I’m loving the chic braided details featured in several of the designs.

      20150311035351Anthropologie
Anthropologie has some of the most feminine yoga clothing I’ve seen, especially the brand Free People (pictured left). With a new location at 761 Queen St W, it’s a great excuse to go for a scroll through the world’s second trendiest neighbourhood (according to Vogue) and buy all of the pretty things.

      Winners
Bet you weren’t expecting this one, but Winners is the perfect place for the yogi on a budget. Not gonna lie, most of my yoga pants are from Winners. With a variety of brands and options at discounted prices, where can you go wrong?!  Click herefor a list of local locations.

And if you happen to be at the mall…

      Joe Fresh
Comfy, affordable and cute, Joe Fresh has become another great alternative for the yogi on the go. Though not the largest collection, Joe Fresh’s line has indeed expanded, and now includes the ever-so-sought-after tanks with built-in bras. At $24, they’re a fraction of the cost of the old standby and great when you only need a little support.

      The Gap
Finally, I leave you with the Gap. The company’s Gap Fit collection impresses me with its diverse designs, soft fabrics, and reasonable price tags. They’ve really amped this line up lately and grown it to include more elaborate back patterns and funky prints. An added bonus? The Gap frequently has sales!

Where else do you buy your yoga clothes? Let’s try to make a list of the best spots in the city.

How to Wear Print Leggings February 18, 2015 14:47 1 Comment

      Yoga Clothing | Active Wear

At Flow-active we pride ourselves on our Canadian manufactured active wear. Almost all the clothing in store and online is designed and made in Canada, from Vancouver to Quebec!

However, when something special comes along we sometimes make an exception, given they follow our ethically manufactured guidelines.

That has been the case for up and coming LA based brand "Onzie" (pronounced own-zee).

On the cusp of the patterned legging craze, Onzie has come out with some of the most stunning and wearable designs, all in their unique fabric. Some say this fabric has a 'slippery' texture. It's secure fit, super stretch, and ultimate sweat wicking abilities make it a favourite amongst hot yogis, cross fitters and anyone who sweats just a little more than the average Joe.

Need some inspiration? Here are our favorite new prints from Onzie:

      Lotus Legging

Pair this intricate design with a loose white T or tank, a light blazer, and a pair of flats for an easy breeze-y spring look.

      Futura Legging

These sleek leggings are the perfect accompaniment to your favourite basic tunic. Throw a cropped sweater on top for the layered look. Add a pair of sandals and you're ready for a day in the city.

      Big Bang

These flirty leggings get a colorful upgrade from their best selling counterpart the "Galaxy" legging. Wear them to class, a concert, or to a yoga festival with a cute crop top. Not your scene? A loose and light sweater and a pair of loafers will have you covered.

A general rule of thumb when styling print leggings is to go neutral and solid on top. White, black and grey are always on point. Pick a colour in the pattern and chose a solid shirt in that color. Tall boots also help to quell the print to a more subtle state.

Unsure if the print legging fad is right for you? Soon enough you'll get tired of the same ol black or grey leggings and come to our side ;)

And if all else fails... just think:

Are you struggling to find the perfect little black legging?

      "These ones are too tight"

      "These ones are too low"

      "These ones are too see-through"

      (Enter the Karma Yama Tight)

      These ones are just right.

High waisted and cut to perfection, these basic leggings are far from boring. The thick waist band adds extra oomph (which minimizes extra belly) with its form fitting ridge detailing. This also makes them the perfect legging to run laps in because the waist band stays up. The ankle cuffs also add a little flair with ridge detailing. It's easy to take these tights from the treadmill or yoga studio to the restaurant for date night.

If you love the fit of the Yama, but want a little more drama, try the printed Karma Kata Tight!
